Feasting on the Word of God
How do you consume the Word of God? Are you like the baby bird that waits for someone else to find, digest, and then spoon feed you the tasty morsels of truth they found? Or are you like an adult hawk who hunts his own meat?
While these skills are successive, they should also be concurrent. Just because you are still being fed by others is no reason to not attempt to dig into the Word on your own. And, just because you are able to feed yourself is no reason to stop learning from others.
God has given us the scriptures so that we may know Him better and therefore experience all that He desires us to enjoy. Paul prayed that the Ephesians would know God better, and that they would experience the hope, riches, and power that God had for them (Eph 1:17-19). Paul also prayed that the Colossians would have the full riches of complete understanding, and …treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Col 2:2-3). And, he prayed that we would be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God (Eph 3:19). The only way we will ever obtain these precious blessings (and we can obtain them because Paul prayed that we would) is to be constantly in the Word of God; either by being taught by others, or by digging into the Word yourself.
Dear friend, I pray that you will develop an unquenchable taste for the Word of God and that you would desire it above all else. May the words of Psalm 119:97-104 be your words.
